How to see where your photos were taken on a map (Android)

Short answer: open the photo → swipe up or ⋮ → Details to see its location. To see all photos as trips on a map, use an on-device app like Crosspath. Turn on “Save location” in the camera for future photos.
Your gallery is a travel diary you never wrote. Here is how to see it on a map — and how to keep that data private.
Check the location of a single photo
- Open the photo in Google Photos or your phone’s gallery.
- Swipe up, or tap ⋮ → Details.
- If the photo is geotagged, you’ll see a small map and the place name.
Turn on location for new photos
Open the Camera app → Settings → enable Save location (the name differs by brand: “Location tags” on Samsung, “Save location” on Pixel, “Location info” on Xiaomi). Make sure the Camera app has location permission.
See all your photos as trips on a map
A map of thousands of dots is noisy. It’s more useful to group photos into visits: photos within ~25 km and 24 hours become one trip. Crosspath does this on-device and shows your trips on a minimal night map with a timeline — and, if you want, compares them with a friend to find places where your paths crossed.
Why Android hides photo location from some apps
Since Android 10, apps need the special ACCESS_MEDIA_LOCATION permission to read GPS from photos, and the system Photo Picker strips location entirely. That protects you from apps silently harvesting where you live. Grant it only to apps that clearly explain why and process data on the device.
Remove location before sharing
In Google Photos: Share → Options → Remove location. Most messengers strip metadata automatically when sending as a photo (but not always when sending as a file).
